National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo
Last week, on the second of November, on the radio during my morning commute, I heard about the National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo. It is an international project where writers aim to write a 50,000 word novel over the month of November. Previous participants have had their NaNoWriMo novels published.
When I heard this I was inspired to do it. I would write the novel which I had been researching and working on for a while. I signed up. I had and still have my doubts that I wouldn’t be able to reach the 50,000 words, but I told myself to try it and if I don’t reach the target I would still have written a significant portion of my novel.
So I started writing. I struggled to meet the target or 1,600 words per day on the first few days, but I did write. And over the last two days I have actually managed to write over 1,000 words a day, so I am improving. I just have to keep it up!
Participants sign up, give a bio of themselves, enter information about the novel they intend to write and update whenever they wish the number of words they have written so far. You can track your statistics and it gives you a target word count per day and the remaining number of words required to meet the 50,000.
Check out National Novel Writing Month for more information and to sign up. As my partner and friends have said to me “just do it!”
